There are several steps on the way to fulfilling your creative dreams.
First you have to NAME THEM! ACKNOWLEDGE THEM.
That might seem obvious, but oftentimes we are so frozen up that we need a little defrosting (like not doing anything at all, just breathing and staring into the sky). Sit in the morning with your cup of tea, coffee or fruit juice of your choice, look out of the window, sip and thing/write to yourself…I have always wanted to…
I have always wanted to…
…write and illustrate a book
…have my own studio
Second, you need to KNOW WHAT IS STOPPING YOU!
…don’t know what the book should be about
(inner bugger into inner coach: brainstorm)
…don’t have enough illustration experience or technical skill for self-publishing
(Lynda? Coursera? Artist colleague?)
…not sure there is a point to it…any money in it to justify it
(well…that is a biiig one…see below, poing three)
…don’t feel entitled to it…waste of precious time and energy and human resources
(who the hell said this one? your dad? your boss? the Pope?)
…I am not good enough
(well…if you never start, you never will be…good enough. Btw. there is never enough)
…I don’t have the space or right to it
(look around for options)
…I need to earn a living and thus should concentrate on translations and EFL teaching.
(well, good point, but if you don’t do it, you will never see if it works)
Third, you need to know WHAT STARTS YOU UP about them. Like…
…it would be so much fun (always a good one!)
…I could run workshops in it/with it (wowsy!)
…it would feel great reading what I have written! (haha)
…I love playing with the felt-tips!!! (I do, I do…)
Fourth, it is good to know who or where you get SUPPORT and INSPIRATION
…my partner is all behind me on this one…JUST DO IT!
…Virginia Woolf was also crazy
…Keri Smith, Sark, …and loads of other people are doing it…so you can too!!!!
Fifth, What is the TIIIINIIIEST WEENIEST FIRST STEP TOWARDS IT?
What is the easiest thing to do? What is the thing that will get me started? If I wasn’t afraid…I would…, If fail was not in the dictionary, I would…, the most courageous thing I can do NOW? The oddest one?
…Set aside 5 – 20 minutes and do it….like brainstorm ideas, make a list of topics, mind-map, braindrain, deepwrite…
…then make another step, and another, schedule these micro-blocks of time and fill them in with baby steps to your project. Easy does it. 5 minutes is better than nothing. Honestly.
Sixth: COLLECT NOTES/RESOURCES/CONTACTS…as you come along, LOG THEM, LIST THEM, LOVE THEM.
Seventh: YOU DO THE WORK and Most importantly of all…Have fun on the way.
I know I know…it is not rocket science…buuut we all know how easy it is to get stuck in the beginning, in the middle and in the end. So just don’t – have your next mini/baby step written on the back of your hand and just do it, chunk it further if need be…to creative atom tasks.
The process is inspired by Sark’s work around what she calls MICROMOVEMENTS. Might wanna look it up 🙂
