What happens when you start to listen to the inner tape and hear what it says for real?
It might take you to a new place in your arting.
I have been doing that over the past few days and a completely new way of painting has emerged for me.
This is the process in visuals.
It started off with me doing one of my #cycleselfies I had been doing in August-September. But this time I had included what the negative voices in my head had been telling me. Pretty shitty, I tell you. I then thought…right what would it take for me not to feel like a copy? And I followed the impulse to step into the canvas and paint with my own body. Hence the first piece #reachingouttomyself. I was fascinated to see the traces of my body and went onto experiment with them. And the other pieces ensued. #making lovetothecanvas, #headless, #butterfliesinmylap and #bigbaby. Not to mention how enlivened I feel creating these, despite their darkness.
How do they make you feel? What do you think about them? What is your reaction to it?
The first one is aimed at unblocking, finding/exploring and developing your own authentic inspirations. The latter one is an uplevel-ing type of creative challenge that can move you forward with mile strides when you take part in it.
This is what people have been saying about them:
Most people have….
reported feeling and becoming more creative in their own lives (apart from arting) and businesses.
reported finding their creative calling and pursuing it as opposed to years of blockage.
appreciated the space Arting has held for their creativity.
learnt to nurture their arting habit/discipline and focus.
reported realizing their fuller personal potential through the process of arting and increased confidence and self-awareness.
appreciated the coaching “helping hand at hand” that has enabled them to make important discoveries and breakthroughs creatively.
Not bad. Me thinketh.
The good news is, you can now join us for #becometheartistyouare challenge in September.
It is my own mix of art theapeutical experiential challenge and an art programme.
I am coaching others on the journey, yet the way my own is unfolding is magical. Well, I kind of knew it…would happen…still…had to do it first.
My intention for the month of May was to turn up and do the arting work, follow the #becometheartistyouare prompts that I had devised over the past couple of years (ten). Every time I do the process, it goes deeper, and I become fuller. Fully me.
From feeling split and unsure which way to go, reconnecting with my childhood self and giving it what it needs, to coming full circle and devoting myself to “total artist’s participation”, I ventured outside and discovered the tools to do the dirty work (call a spade a spade and wear wellies :-)). Celebrating with Confetti of Life. Every single bit, every single breath, the drizzle of life.
Not bad for a first week, right?
In the second week we had been exploring the Inspired By process. Learning from our currently favourite artwork, artwork we have been drawn to. Mine: Object by Meret Oppenheim from 1936.
The week two has taken me on a rollercoaster of exploration – different facets of the work and perspectives on it. I created a fluffy lump of sugar, a sketch for my paintings of a doe drinking from the cup, conceptual photograph inspired by Oppenheim’s quote that “Art in not about decoration, but spirit.” and dressed up my own cup of coffee in different ways. Wrote poems about it all as a way of integration.
What emerged from week three which explored the elements of visual language as we do our twenty minutes of arting practice, were these two paintings I am still digging, making a small film from them and seeing where week four with the guiding principles of visual language takes me.
And that was my own process only.
Other magics have been happening in other’s lives, as they did the work, too. Discovering the boldness, courage and fearlessness, and stepping stones of action and tools to take it. To name a few. The #becometheartistyouare challenge is on. It is not too late to join in. You can take it a day at a time and join us in the process in a safe and friendly environment of a closed forum. I am there: nudging, supporting and cheering you on, depending on what you need most. Join us on here.
It depends where you are…and it helps you understand that and move you in the best possible direction for yourself.
See, art is a powerful tool…for exploration, for undestanding, for moving forth. And #becometheartistyouare process utilizes this. Somewhere between an art-therapeutic discovery session and creative challenge, it moves you.
By creating daily, for twenty minutes minimum, following the gentle, yet powerful prompts, magic starts happening.
The process takes you from realizing what has been blocking you all those years, to seeing how you see, and what you are drawn to. Inspired by your favourite works, you retell your own story using whatever is at hand. Learning and exploring the visual language elements and principles to create your own piece to show the world (or to a segment of your choice) you stand in your truth. All in a supportive and understanding cocoon of a closed forum, for a month.
Circumnavigating the language, yet utilizing it for reflection, it mixes up the best of the beyond-conscious and conscious worlds.
Following the process of creating from within yourself, and exploring your world, you not only #becometheartistyouare, you become more of yourself, consciously.
This is a very bad picture of my “bad” drawing. These are my findings…
…it is difficult for me to make a bad drawing because I know there is no such thing.
…”bad”, when I try to make it bad means for me with unsuitable means (such as a biro), done in a quick manner and sloppily…
…yet, even that does not make it bad. I can accept it…and felt drawn into the process of fun furry flufiness.
…all this brought up the memories of the school days when we were asked to draw all sorts of s…t I was not really interested in. The teacher said I did not try “hard enough”, always went outside the lines,…and my funny ideas such as a skating birdie for a christmas card were not accepted.
…I could not bring myself just some random thing, I was drawn to the teddy on the sofa. It made me think and remember all the teddies I had had in my life. There were two. One I gave away to a younger friend when I was twelve because the little girl really like it. The second I one I was given at the clinic by my sister, when I was recovering from a split up with my ex-husband. This third one is not mine really, but I have it in my living room now. A silent witness :-).
Funny, right, a what a “stupid” lill’ bad drawing can conjure up?
In May I am running this unique mixture of visual art training and art therapy self-experiential challenge: #becometheartistyouare.

…was the brand tagline I came up with on my instagram feed. When I was trying to fit in my painting, my jewellery and my teaching into one basket (Easter eggs pun intended).
So, mi dears…in case you don’t know…I am hopelessly creative.
I have been working on my #seemetoseeyourself portrait project since last year. Started off as a connecting lifeline to the world – talking and painting friends over skype, this evolved into its own life upon finding out that I somehow (don’t ask me how) manage to capture how people feel and are on the inside at the time we speak/I paint them. Also it turned out that these portrait sessions were rather therapeutic, even without speaking, because the act of being seen, being witnessed is a powerful one, even over skype.
The #silverlining jewellery collection came about as an answer to my childhood memories and a spring cleaning discovery of a jar filled with these 70s and 80s vintage plastic beads. The result is simple, playful…yet somehow profound I find. :-). Pun intended again.
And as you may know, I have been writing a book, and most recently turned it into a 30-day challenge e-course #becometheartistyouare. You can join us for a rollercoaster of exploration, discovery and authentic art making. All you need is twenty minutes a day, a sketchbook, pencil, phone camera and yourself. No prior arting experience required. Promised.
Art as therapy. Art as an answer. If in doubt, throw art at it. Has been my motto ever since…well, way back ten years minimum. Before that I was hopelessly stuck. Fearing I was not talented enough…and not entitled to create at all. It hurt. It itched. It burst.
Bit like a butterfly out of a cocoon.
And the butterfly is fluttering its wings…and spreading the message and if you feel inspired by any of it…join me on the challenge, or get yourself a portrait session or a fun ring or a set.
I mean it. If you must…sing in the shower. Or somewhere nobody can hear.
What is your inner song?
Is it a popular melody from the radio? Is it your own hum? Your own tune?
Listen to yourself. Carefully. Tune into the radio of you.
And then…go, and create.
See what happens!
I have been posting these creative challenge prompts as a way of warming up to #becometheartistyouare 30Day challenge that starts in May. If you want to share your journey, why not join us in Arting group.
